Orlando Tutorial
How to go from this, this, and this to in PS7.

As requested by jovi_diva.

1. Create a base of 100x100 filled in black.

2. Crop your bottom image to 60x100 and dock it on the left side of the black base. Stroke a 1px black border around the inside. (Ctrl-A, Edit->Stroke)

3. Duplicate the bottom image and desaturate it, then set it to soft light at 100%opacity. This just serves to deepen the shadows and make the image a bit darker, which is an effect that I really like. Now, sharpen the still colored layer and apply an unsharp mask to the desaturated layer. Repeat if needed.

4. Crop your second image to 40x40 and stroke a 1px black border around the inside. Move it to where you like, then desaturate it. Sharpen if needed.

5. Go back to the same cropped image in its original window (where it still has color), copy and paste it on top of the desaturated one and set it to soft light at 100% opacity. This gives it the barest hint of color.

6. Crop your third image to 45x55, paste it onto the icon, and desaturate it. Then repeat step 5 (copying the colored image on top and setting it to soft light). Sharpen if needed.

7. Now, find your light brush. I used one by asya_17. Seth it to screen at 50% opacity.

I don't know how to do an unsharp mask. Can you tell me where and how to do that?

Re: anon=me
Sure thing. Make sure you have the layer you want selected, then go to Filter->Sharpen->Unsharp mask.

I'm so glad you like it!

Mmm, Colin Farrel! My suggestion would be to move the medium pic up a bit maybe, because it kinda gets cut off at the bottom? But it looks great! Nice pic choices!! ;D

thanks for the feedback. i tried again with a different icon, but somehow mine doesnt look as good as yours lol can you tell me what im doing wrong? the colors dont seem right or something...maybe its the quality of the original pics.

i had an icon i made a few years ago, just my messing around, so its not very good at all, lol so i decided to make it again using my newly learned technique :)

I definitely helps to use 3 pics from the same photoshoot because then they look similar. Also, are you desaturating the side two? And um...if you dont want to cover the bigger image any more than you are maybe make the smaller ones even smaller? I dunno, I really like the "old" one!

last post, im sorry. i have a question (and one last attempt at a decent looking icon, hehe)

for the light brush...all of my brushes come out in black and white. how can you get it to have color? for this, ive just been pasting it as a new layer.

That's what I do with this kind of light texture - it's an imagepack. Unless it's the light spots like in the icon I'm using, in which case it'll be whatever color your foreground color is.

My first attempt, I used 3 images so they turned out too small, but, yea, I'm pleased. Thanks!

what does desaturate mean?
baby, i'm a dreamerkeeplistening on September 1st, 2006 11:30 pm (UTC)
to turn it black and white.
